Roman: Alright, I want to get a tattoo that will make me simply too cool to resist. Ideas?
Patton: A date that is important to you! Like your birthday!
Roman: Aw, thanks, Pat, that’s really cute, but-
Virgil: A fake date. Put it on a place that you would usually put sentimental, cheesy stuff on, like your inner wrist, or the back of your neck, or over your heart. Write “Never Forget” or something like that in a respectful, subtle font above, and initials “A. C. L. A.” under.
Roman: …
Roman: But- but WHY??
Virgil: Because imagine: You are walking with someone. Things are going great. You fall into a comfortable silence, enjoying each other’s company. You causally adjust the sleeve of your jacket, and that’s when they see it. The tattoo. The subtle font that reads: “Never Forget – 5. 2. 2003 – A. C. L. A.” Their smile freezes. They tentatively reach out and catch your hand, asking “What is this tattoo for?” You look at them, surprised. Then you turn your face away in sudden solemnity. “Something too important to forget,” you say, softly. Then you look up at them again, the sun or whatever-the-shit making you look serious and magnificent. You gaze them in the eyes in thought. “I never told that story to anyone,” you say after a long pause, “but I have a feeling that when I decide to tell it one day, you will be the first one to know.”
And that’s it. Boom. The moment you say that, they are yours forever. You will get married and have kids and a dog and fund a small forest community. Because A) everyone loves a guy with a sob-story behind a mystery tattoo, and B) they will be too curious to ever leave you without hearing that story, because curiosity is humanity’s greatest drug, right after empathy and fascination with tragedies. You’re welcome.
