it’s.. all of it actually. (this got v long i apologize)
at first it’s the sheer fucking talent the guy has?? at such a young age too?? And Remy has seen him around, has heard of him and those sanders brothers and caught glimpses of interviews and such and so obviously at first Remy had the same feeling about Virgil as just about anyone else- why would someone who looks SO uncomfortable be in such business? Give the boy a nap. But that’s about it for a while-
But then they meet? Remy’s just hanging around in a recording studio- chatting up with the people from the place (Roman’s not the only one with charisma up his ass and also lots of connections) And then there’s the sound of soft plucking of strings in a passing room and he has to stop and go back on his tracks and whom the heck is this guy just sitting in the middle on a bunch of instrument cases and speakers, almost as if hiding from the rest of the building?
And the guy has walls around him the size of the great wall of china and ghosts behind his eyes but fuck Remy wants to sees him every day and will do so if he has anything to say about it. (which he does. because Roman’s recording something in this building and Virgil trails him around like a pup just to be around music so Remy gets a full week of him). he gets his attention with music and thats just the right move because now Virgil actually looks at him when he talks and thats good, thats a step forward.
At the end of the week he gives Virgil his number and tells him they should have more jamming sessions again. He thinks it’s eagerness when his heart skips a beat when Virgil smiles at him and says “Sure, why not”
But then it happens again and again; virgil laughing -really laughing- at one of his million rants, a chord that sounds just right at just the right moment and they both go “whoa” and laugh like idiots, the quiet but very serious “go to Sleep. right now.” when it’s been three days of insomnia and Virgil’s frowning but Remy cans see the concern there so he agrees.
and Later, it’s how he helps Remy figure things out about him-herself. How he confides his fears and nightmares and how they make the older sick with worry for the boy. how when he tells remy that he’s afraid to go on camera because every screen is a screen they might see and how much it must’ve taken him to tell Remy those things.
But then after that it’s how he notices other things- like how virgil leans into him around new people- around crowds- just the two of them and their late night youtube dives nights. But how some days he’ll shy away from touch, mumbling a sorry and looking as though someone kicked a puppy right in front of him- but that’s okay, Remy doesnt push, just nods and let it go and shows him a new song idea. It’s the relieved smile that follows, and thats a smile Remy wants to see again and again; the “thank you- I trust you-thank you” smile.
It’s the downright rage he feels when comments get too real- too crude and invasive- for Virgil to handle, the seething red he sees and need to protect, but keeps it inside- the boy doesnt need more rage in his life- he’s seen enough- so Remy just offers his shoulder and hugs him when v leans into it.
Mostly though, it’s happy days and pizza and dumb songs and jam sessions that leaves them high and giddy from the music and thinking of how much he wants to kiss that smile and keep it for himself but also broadcast it to the rest of the world so they’d just see.
