Patton’s mother breeds and shows horses. Patton and Logan were literally raised in the saddle.
Virgil has never been near a horse in his life.
When Virgil is recovering from his illness, he and Patton spend a good amount of time at the ranch, and Virgil watches Patton take a couple horses through some jumps (he used to do show-jumping when he was younger). Virgil teases Patton for being ‘country’ but secretly thinks it’s the most amazing thing ever. Patton is super relaxed around these gigantic powerful animals and they adore him.
Patton introduces him to a few of the friendlier horses (his mom is a super soft touch so in addition to the Friesians she breeds, she has a number of rescues, too).
Virgil is super shy around the animals so Patton starts him off with a big friendly gelding named Bard, who is a black percheron adopted after his owner passed away. He is 10 years old and gigantic, standing at 17 hands, but he adores Virgil and follows him around with his head low and his ears flicked forward. Virgil stays on the safe side of the fence at first, but eventually gets comfortable enough to join Patton in the paddock with Bard.
Virgil never really gets into riding. But he does eventually get super comfy with Bard, and spends time outside with him. Bard is an absolute doll, super gentle and sweet, and he’ll let Virgil lean against him and stroke his neck or nose as long as he likes.
Bard becomes Virgil’s horse, and taking care of him calms Virgil down a lot any time he’s feeling anxious.
