why roman sanders is a slytherin (and how being one could help his development)
So here’s the thing. In the episode “Fitting In” it is obvious that Roman sees himself as a Gryffindor. After all the switching around, all the Sides settle into the house they believe they belong in aside from Virgil, who decides not to belong in any. Logan a Ravenclaw, Patton a Hufflepuff, and again, Roman a Gryffindor. It isn’t really questioned after that since Roman is the bravest, most daring of all the Sides, right? But I believe Roman Sanders is a Slytherin and here’s why:
First of all, let’s look at traits. Roman aligns with the reckless and brave elements of Gryffindor well, and I will admit if any of the Sides had to be a Gryffindor it would be him. But here’s where we draw the line. Slytherins are ambitious, cunning, passionate… basically they do whatever they want to get whatever they want. Roman is Thomas’ passion and he does just that. We see this a lot in “Why Do We Get Out of Bed In the Morning?” when Roman is trying to convince Thomas that accomplishing his dreams is the purpose of life, denying that anything else such as his own friendships and self-care is important compared to his success.
Now, this all may sound bad the way I worded it but Roman is creativity. He is Thomas’ hopes and dreams, literally, and will stop at nothing to achieve whatever Thomas wants. That is literally Roman’s purpose. If Roman was a Gryffindor wouldn’t you think he’d be more chivalrous about dream-accomplishing and (no offense to you Gryffindors, you guys are great) less driven on making dreams happen in the larger scheme of life?
Which leads to my next point: Most of the princes Roman looks up to are probably Gryffindors from being brave (and debatably reckless), so wanting to be like them, he considers himself too a Gryffindor. And Roman has very black-and-white thinking and from the way he talks in “Fitting In” we can see he believes Gryffindors are good and Slytherins are evil. Wanting to be good, he believes he is a Gryffindor. Also Gryffindor is the most popular house, mainly because it was Harry Potter’s house. Roman could identify with that house in hopes of being more well-liked as a member of the “best” house.
That being said believing he is a Gryffindor makes him more of what he wants to be: a dashing, well-liked, brave, heroic prince. But like what fantasy does sometimes, he’s not being true to himself that way. Roman is brave, sure, but he’s ambitious, cunning, passionate, and his Slytherin traits far exceeded his Gryffindor ones. Now that’s not to say he’s not Gryffindor at all. I personally believe he’s a Slytherin with Gryffindor tendencies, but that’s just me.
But how would this all help his overall character development? Well for one, accepting himself as Slytherin could help him by further defeating his black-and-white thinking if he learns to see himself as good and a Slytherin, therfor meaning Slytherins are not all bad. It would help him stray away from this image that he has where he has to be this “perfect” prince like the ones he admires and be unique and more himself, and overall reduce his stress and help his obviously lowering self-esteem. Not to mention it would cost a whole self-journey to get to accepting himself as a Slytherin, which the others could help out in him and make him realize that even if he’s not a Gryffindor like he thought he was he still fits right in.
((,,gonna tag some people who might like this,, uhh @unring-this-bell @notveryglittery @impatentpending (<- you said something about Roman being a slytherin??) and @roman-sanders-protection-squad …what do you all think?))
Fam I’ve HCed him Slytherine since before fitting in! It is honestly such a great HC I do approve!
